When children find joy in learning, they naturally become motivated and interested in the subject. The topic for Environmental Studies was “Birds.” To make learning more engaging and meaningful, we at Mirraloke decided to explore this topic through a visit to the Kolkata Zoo. During the visit, the children closely observed different types of birds and their unique body features. They noticed how these features vary depending on the birds’ habits and food. For example, they observed birds that catch fish, birds that swim, those that feed on grains, fruits and nuts, and those that eat flesh. They also learned about birds that cannot fly but can run, such as the ostrich. They had taken with them a book on Birds and identified some they saw. The children carefully watched the birds and recorded their observations in their own ways. After the visit, it was evident that they had developed a clearer understanding and a strong idea about different kinds of birds.
